Brian

That's a good possible solution!

The downpipe is on good and solid. The rear pipe and box a sparklingly new, but this middle box is the prob. Unfortunately the old one isn't savable.

I'll call you in a little while.

Here's a pic of the two next to each other.

My exhaust manifold gaskets have turned to dust on the Volvo, and I've used exhaust paste as a substitute. It had an MOT last week and passed with flying colors, so I'd say for the short term, yes you can use it and it should be fine.

Thanks to Brian (Classicscrap) who donated the middle box.

Drove round in the 1600 which gave it a good run before its MOT on Tuesday.

Too late to fir the exhaust now, but I'm still eager to do it. I must be mad. :P

Thanks for the tip about the exhaust paste. I eventually found some rings and used them. Lovely seal (despite one of the bolts shearing.

Fitted the exhaust - just need to work out how the heck to get brackets on the thing. There were none to start with so nothing to copy, but the mountings are like none I've seen before. Guess this is very early HC-ville.

The good news is that if the green HC doesn't make it through the MOT, I have the 1600 which sailed through its MOT today. That was a relief.....

Just a few more pics.

Seats are from a Manta. Only the driver's in at the moment (might stay like that). Seat belts there - but static ones for now until I can get time to properly fir the inertia ones I got from a Rover 800.

I'm trying one more time for Matt's idea about running for 30 mins and wedging the pedal down. If not, Saturday is the day to rip the gearbox out.

Ready for MOT!

The clutch didn't free up again, so took the gearbox out today and replaced the clutch. For the first time in 11 years, the car has moved of its own accord.

Exhaust now mounted properly. Followed Paul C's advice and seem to have the engine running sweetly.

There is a kind of light tapping noise as I put strain on the engine, so who knows? More tappety than big end, but until I drive it some distance, I'm not going to know. Might be OK, might be pants. Anyway it will get me to the MOT at least.

Good luck for the ticket mate. I've got mine on Wednesday too. Gonna do my own MOT first at home on Monday, should be ok i hope.
Glad the carb is ok now, what system worked then? was it the first or second method?
Do you still need the 1256 exhaust section? Only i have someone else who is desperate for it too.
I'll have a look for any OHC sections for you. What parts do you need, or do you want any bits?

I used the second method. Seems fine now.

I'll PM you about bits.

Good luck with your MOT too!

It passed its MOT!!!!!!

So I'll be coming to Billing in it. Seems to drive OK. Brakes were really good and it drove quite nicely. Engine still seems to hunt a bit, so will fiddle with that later.

The tapping was not big end - so at least I can cross that off my list of concerns.

So, after 11 years of being off the road - it is now BACK ON!
