Roma II help finding a VIN

Postby Gromit » Fri Sep 11, 2015 4:59 pm

Hello all. I have a HA Roma II restoration project, a complete '69 dry stored car complete with original camper bits. It needs a lot of work but is very restorable! At some time in the past the inner wing has been welded and the VIN plate removed, on trying to register it with the DVLA I find the VIN is all they are interested in now.

I need to find the VIN in order to save this Roma, and hope knowledge of these vehicles on the forum can tel me if / where the number is stamped on the body shell? Any ideas on locating the VIN number would be appreciated. Next time I will find the VIN before contacting the DVLA - the value of hindsight.

Any advice gratefully received,

I'm not sure about the Ha but on the later Hc,the plate on the inner wing is riveted on but is unimportant as none of the numbers refer to the chassis no.

The chassis number is actually riveted on the top of the dashboard and can be read from the outside.

I assume you don't have a reg document otherwise you could just get a plate made up and riveted on. An old tax disc can be very helpful.

The VIN plate on 69 HA vans will be on the left hand door pillar and looks like this.

There's lots of info on chassis numbers and VIN's in the Technical details section under each model.

Do you have a reg number for this one? Any photos?

Thanks for the replies - I have looked for the plate on the door pillars and it is just not there. Are the numbers stamped anywhere on the shell? Its registration is VYB246G, but to keep that I need to locate the VIN.

I'm not sure which left hand pillar it is on but probably the hinge pillar or 'A' pillar, and not the lock or 'B' pillar.

Hi, the vin on all ha vans is only on the vin plate which is on the nearside inner wing and not stamped anywhere on the body!
would the dormobile build plate (on the pass door) not keep the dvla happy?

What about looking for any old mot's on the dvla website and you might get the chassis no from them!

Hi All, I had looked on the A post and on the inner wings but no sign of the plate there, but it has had new sills at some time, and there is evidence of welding so maybe the plate was removed then. It came with no paperwork so no clues there but all the numbers are there including the Dormobile number (5192.9.587), its in its original Grey with a light blue stripe, but DVLA are only interested in the VIN! I have tried the DVLA website but it only tels me the last MOT expired in August 1989. I'm not feeling very hopeful but plan to empty the van tomorrow and have a good search to see if there is a loose plate or any other clues.
Thanks for your advice and I'll let you know what happens.

Hi, you can look all you like but the only plate with vin details on would be on nearside inner wing about 8" x 3"
You may well find the 4 original rivet holes still there...
Later vans had 3 smaller plates....
I'm breaking a couple of romas if you need any bits!

We do have that one in our register, but the only info we have is from the ebay ad, only 1 picture. Good luck with the project, keep us informed, and a few more pictures would be nice. You could try Vauxhall Heritage with the reg number and Martin Walker numbers, they might have some more info.
