That's one of the fusible links, though I've never been sure whether the U-shaped connector is the fusible bit, or the short wires from the loom that go to it.

If you're having trouble with the switches, have a look at adding relays into the circuit as this will take the load away from that and the majority of the loom. The switch and loom will then only be carrying as much power as the relay needs to operate.
