1800 estate propshaft options

Postby VampireTigger » Wed Feb 27, 2019 12:07 pm

Vehicle currently has a two piece prop where the centre bearing needs replacing. Anyone know where I can get one that would be welcome news.

In the event I can't find one, Fred said a single piece prop from an OHC car would do. I don't know if this vehicle being an auto effects the prop length.

Any help appreciated.

Automatic prop has different front joint. The splines are different. However, the splines are the same as the ZF box fitted to the HPF, and the prop is the same length too. That creates a problem in itself in that HPF owners in the know have snapped up all the automatic props or are willing to pay a premium for a good one.

Now there are two different centre bearings, one for a UJ propshaft that can be replaced on a DIY basis and one for the CV joint propshaft fitted to post 73 cars. The diameter of the centre bearing on the earlier one is 1" and the later one is 30mm.

Props came in three styles, 3 UJ's (circlip or staked types), 2 UJ's (staked type) plus a centre CV, and then 3 CV's. Your's probably is either a 3 UJ or 2 UJ and 1 CV type. You'll need to check the diameter of the centre bearing. I had a propshaft made up by a specialist from an old 3 UJ staked prop but fitted a later centre bearing with a sleeve fitted to make up the thickness.

Have a look here. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=25463&hilit=prop

You could research and fit an alternative bearing with a bit of alteration.

An automatic OHV single piece prop has the same splines but may be a bit longer, I'm not sure.

I ran a single piece prop for a while when my new 2 piece as getting made up. I found that the single piece prop was OK but it does make the car a bit less comfortable and it adds enough to the unsprung weight to need a couple of extra clicks on my adjustable shock absorbers.

I've got a couple of new centre bearings off something else - the "ears" need lengthening to mount on a HC centre crossmember, but I don't think that's a massive job. If you're interested let me know what diameter you need and I'll check it.

I'm going to send some pics to Bailey Morris, see if they can do anything.

They are a propshaft manufacturer.

I'm also enquiring about any old Viva stock they have as a potential source for others
