Interesting and thanks for the replies. Actually they said the same: you can add your modern cars to this, so long as they don't outnumber the classics.
So I said - so is this a classic policy then? No, it's multicar. Like you, I don't want to mix things.
The price is still OK - less than yours (albeit less cars) but it is unlimited mileage and all the breakdown cover etc.
Just a shock to go up that much for a reason that seems a bit tenuous. I was told "we've had a max of 3 cars on the classic policies for years". When I said that I've had more than 3 for 8 years, the response was "well it's probably catching up on you!" Great....
It runs out on Wednesday so I'll have to do something quick. As I am very short of time these days, the likelihood is that I will end up having to go with it.
The most intriguing thing I was told was about parking the car. I said that mine are on the drive - which sometimes they are but mostly are in the garage. Two of the cars had been listed as parked on the road (incorrectly) so I thought this was the reason for the hike. Apparently not. I had been told 2 years ago by FJ that if you list your car as being in the garage and it is stolen off your drive, it isn't covered, so always insure it for the drive, not in the garage. What I was told today is that drive and public road are classed as the same. I find that hard to believe and certainly isn't the case with my normal car insurance.
Oh well.....
