I contacted Bigg Red about brake calipers for the front of the Magnum - they said they didnt have any listed but enquired if they were the same as the other HC Viva models. What info should I give them to make sure I get the correct parts?!

They are Girling P14 calipers.

You can choose to remain standard and fit direct replacements or you can choose to upgrade. The simplest upgrade is to fit Girling P16 calipers (imperial) if you can find them! The advantage is bigger piston and pad area which provides a significant upgrade over the standard caliper.

A cheaper, better and easier to source but slightly more complex upgrade is to fit Girling M16 metric calipers or their copies made by ATE etc. These were fitted to many F@#ds during the 80's and are really cheap (£40 - £50 each outright). They have the same piston size as the P16 but have an increase of about 15% in pad area. The last ones I bought on Amazon were for £42 each delivered!

The differences are that they have metric pipe fittings, meaning that a new brake pipe needs to be made up, and the mounting holes are metric M12 instead of imperial on the original calipers which is about 11.75mm.

Some Landrovers had a special bolt which had a metric shank and the correct sized imperial thread but I can't seem to be able to locate any. The F@#d conversion bolts from Burton are the wrong size. However I, along with many competition minded owners, have fitted M16's using the original imperial bolts without any problems, just add some Locktite to the threads and torque them up correctly.

Fitting either P16's or M16's does not require any disc upgrades or modifications to the mounting holes, stub axles or disc brake shields.

Girling type 14 are still available reconditioned or even NEW, because the same as Triumph Herald 1200.
