I can't offer any advice but I'm following this as I'm interested to know.

I just got a 65 ha myself and although my starter it turning over now I've been reading this is a common problem.

I would check the teeth on the drive of the starter in case they are badly worn, but I guess you have already looked at that if you have stripped it down.
If it just clicks when fitted and trying to start, it could be the starter solenoid unit underneath the battery tray, or bad earth connections. Give them all a good wire brushing or filing, especially the main one, engine block to chassis, down low on the left hand side.
If still jamming, it could be more of a problem whereby the drive teeth on the engine flywheel have chewed off. This means an engine out job unfortunately.
Remember its engine AND gearbox together out at the same time!! It's a real pain in the **** to try it any other way!!
Split the gearbox from the block when out and the flywheel will be obvious.
I have seen it done on other cars, where removing the flywheel and replacing it back 90 degrees round, gives a fresh set of teeth for the starter to bite on, but not sure if it works on a viva. Haven't tried it.
Other than that its a specialist job to fit a new ring gear, or find another flywheel unfortunately!!
Hope that helps and good luck. Let me know how you get on.
Quite happy to come over and give you a hand!!!! hint, hint for the air fare( sorry Wife says I can't, spoilsport)!!!
I love BC, always said I would emigrate there if I could!! Exactly where are you?

Will one from a Mini or MG Midget not fit? Check it has the same number of teeth on the pinion. Vivas are 9 I think and Minis are 10.... or is it the other way around?

Just a thought.... someone may have swapped yours before and fitted one with the incorrect number of teeth.

The Mini one has wider fixing holes so does not fit!
