The dog gets less doggy

Postby mazzo » Fri Apr 16, 2010 8:52 pm

When I saved this car from being scrapped, it seemed solid in a lot of places but the floor was shot. It had the usual rust on front wings and rear wheel arches, the windscreen surround and the sills.

It looked like this:

The floor was replaced (thanks Mike) - this is before it was primed and painted

So today has taken a long time to arrive, but I have now started to get the car looking less like a wreck and more like it should. I am like a kid with a new toy (only had it back 4 hours!)

Tomorrow starts the task of putting all the chrome and bits back on. The inside is still very rough but I feel I am starting to get somewhere. At the end of the day, this little car didn't become a baked bean can and that gives me some sort of sense of achievement. A long way still to go but I'm chuffed :D

Hi Jon

Yes, it was done by him. Took almost 2 months because he fitted it around other jobs and although it has some small imperfections, I think he has done an amazing job. It is like having a decent car for once!

Thanks for the comments.

Have now put a fair bit of the chrome back on but it's covered in volcanic ash! Odd stuff in that it has a sticky-ish residue too. Need to wash it at the weekend.

Only things I seem to have messed up is one of those little rubber L shaped things that are on the top of the wings (bonnet stops) and the bases of my wing mirrors. If I can sort that out, I'm done!

Then the work on the inside starts and some engine attention which probably means taking the head off and having a poke around.

At least the weather is good for doing things :)

I'll post a few more pics at the weekend.

I meant to do this a few weeks ago but like usual, things happen. In my case it was a blown head gasket and so had to split the engine and at the same time did the timing chain, changed it to a Nikki carb and generally fiddled about.

I have now put all the chrome back on. It does shine and although it isn't perfect, every mark you can see on these photos is a reflection. I am quite happy with it and last night used it to take my daughter to her leaving prom. It got quite a lot of attention there. The funniest thing was on the way there when a fire engine on an emergency call with lights flashing etc, saw the car and the firemen were hanging out the windows to look at it as they zoomed by!

Just got to paint on the trim line, put back one of the reverse lights and the aerial. The inside still needs LOTS of work!!!
