Off next week on holidays so started fitting up the engine and front subframe today ready for installation. Fitted the alternator, new engine mounts and my prized S/S copy of the DTV road 4 branch with nice shiny new gasket and stainless bolts. :D

This is the design that was copied for the Snoot.

The whole subframe and engine will be mounted on a wheeled trolley and rolled below the shell.

From previous experience the upper subframe mounting bolts, the ones that go vertically through the chassis rail, will be fitted with 8 inch long soft plastic tubes to assist guiding them through the hole in the chassis. :goodideasign:

That's a great tip fella....Nothing worse than paint getting scratched and or threads mashed up

Very nice, will stainless bolts be ok for the heat and vibration on the manifold?

A2 Stainless are about half way between mild steel and high tensile as far as strength goes. I've used spring washers and thread locking compound as well.

I find that they always go in crooked and get jammed. The plastic tube stops that completely.

Glad you're encouraged by my efforts. What are you planning? Mine started as a teenage dream 35 years ago!! Now it's a low budget, DIY, see if it works type of build. I hope to show that the late '70's early '80's theme still cuts it today.

So my plans are no modern engines, gearboxes, wheels, seats, etc - build it just the way I planned 35 years ago - with the exception of the colour and a few stainless bolts!

Bolted up the gearbox crossmember today and noticed this....

Image

Hmmm...... A bit tight. Not enough space to fit the security strap on the manifold joint. So I whipped the subframe out while balancing the engine precariously on a jack. A bit of heat and a big hammer and this is the result.

Image

Back in the car and clearance is greatly improved.

Image.

The security strap got the same treatment as the subframe.... just in case.

I'm glad I didn't powdercoat the subframe. A quick touch up with the paintbrush and all will be fine.
