HI All
I bought this car and it arrived on Friday evening on a trailer.
unfortunaly it needs a new clutch, amongst other minor things .
three questions I have ,being new to Vauxhalls
#1 what size clutch do I need6.5''?. can I fit a larger one 7.5''?
#2 on the n/s engine block (painted blue) is casting 1256 is this the cc?
#3 the lights aren't working but the fuses are ok,any ideas please?

Not sure on the clutch, are you sure it needs one, these are prone to sticking when sat for long periods of time.
1256, yes thats the cc, which means its not the original engine, HB's were 1159cc.
Lights, new bulbs?

Well bought Sir,

Clutches are fairly readily available - either through club membership at discounted spares prices or via ebay - both of which will become your best friends for HB spares -

It's a good idea to obtain a set of factory service manuals or a Haynes workshop manual before starting any work on the car.

In relation to lights, double check the lights fuse. Sometimes fuses fail invisibly burnt out inside at the end of the fuse. Failing that check the light switch and relay.

HB Vivas are pretty simple cars but, like all things fifty years old, they need constant maintenance and repair - and therefore a little basic mechanical aptitude and, perhaps more importantly, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

We're here to help if we can.

Good luck and happy Vivaing! :D

Hi Guys
thanks for the update on the viva
the clutch works but the pedal is almost at the top and the engine has no pulling power, that's how I think its the clutch.
will check fuses again for lights, and the 1256 on the block confirms the cc but being a one owner car from new I can find (amongst the extensive paperwork I received) no mention of engine change although the servicing finished at 32k in the original book and all MOTs are consistent with the mileage right up to its time off the road in a barn.
would also like rostyle wheels if anyone knows of any going!
thanks again guys

If it's a 1256 engine the car has definitely had a replacement engine at some point since 1972. No HB Viva was ever produced with a 1256 engine from new. The 1256 wasn't introduced in the later HC until 1972 - two years after HB production ended.

It's not at all unusual for an HB 1159 engine to be replaced with a later, interchangeable and slightly more powerful 1256 unit.

Again, ebay is the place to look for spares. These are the correct 4" PCD Viva Rostyles. Although Rostyles are slightly larger 13" rims they are a direct replacement for the 12" HB rims, although the car's gearing and speedo reading will be very slightly affected by the larger diameter wheels and tyres.
