Speedo cable outlet oil leak (Viva 1256)

Postby J. J. » Tue Mar 10, 2020 11:52 am

My '71 HC 1256 gearbox is leaking oil via speedo cable outlet.
Is there some gasket/o-ring that i can replace without taking the whole thing apart?
Oil travels inside the speedo cable and dipping down at the lowest spot of it

The parts book shows a little disc seal that sits between the cable outer and the drive unit on the gearbox, do you have that? I went to some trouble to source one for my OHC car, and it's hasn't cured it completely. You may be able to do something similar with a small disc of rubber to seal around the edge, and a suitable hole for the square drive to turn in.

There's a spiral on the drive shaft - going on from something that 1972Nail said elsewhere about the OHC distributor, perhaps that might need cleaning out. I'm never sure if these spirals are intended to take oil to the point where the drive spins in the outer casing, or bring it away.
