Reet brassed off I tell thee

Postby box of bits » Thu Jul 19, 2012 2:42 pm

got a bit of a problem. First the headlights - full beams work but dip and side dont. Did get dip to work once but when the mains came on the dips were off ?? side lights dont work and neither do the dash lights or the rear lights- brake and indicators work just fine. Anyone had this and know what is going on?
Is it a relay ? Found the main beam one and it is fine

Try cleaning all the earth points and connections in the fuse box.

Check all fuses and clean off all terminals you can get at. Also ensure all contacts are making a good, positive/firm contact. Check bulbs too. Could be as simple as that.

Success and here were the problems

Although the 8amp fuse was good , the contact had become slightly too large - therefore not making full contact- side lights, rear lights and dash lights all 100% - Yippee

BUT the dip full beam problem- well I have traced it to the column stalk - so the question is do these repair or if its buggered who as one?

Please clarify what's still wrong box of bits, in normal operation dipped and full-beam are never both operating together, it's one or the other I'm sure. The only situation both might be lit is if the dipped beam is already on, and you use the headlamp flash control (pulling the stalk towards the steering wheel, against spring tension).

Good advice above, earthing troubles and poor connections, the usual issues.

I take it that vehicle has twin headlamps, in which case dipped and full beams will NOT be on at same time. Above is quite right. It's one or tother.

Nor are they on at the same time on the rectangular headlights in the sense that the dipped filament goes off and the full beam filament comes on. On all cars I know of, whether twin or single headlight/bulb, dipped and full beam come on exclusive of each other.

I think I know what he means- the main headlight bulbs, as opposed to the sidelight bulbs, are still playing up. Am I right?
