Viva HC Ignition coil troubleshooting?

Postby somedaymonday » Mon Sep 30, 2013 1:47 pm

Hey all,

I have an 1971 1159 cc HC viva.

My problem this. Car just about starts when cold (2-3 attempts), but once hot the car will not restart. I traced this down to the ignition coil (it must be overheating, or damaged right?)

I have done a few measurements and here are the results.

Ohms of the LT points reads 2Ω
Ohms of the HT lead reads 9570Ω

Then I moved on and checked the voltage from the + positive cable to the ground (as in i disconnected it), so that would be the resistance wire/ballast,

It read. 12.46 volts (voltage across battary is 12.56, and yes I know its a bit undercharged but thats due the starting attempts, it was no different when fully charged), when I crank the engine (ie the starter motor draws power) the voltage then drops to 2 volts.

Following diagram B, reading should of been .2 (circuit breaker closed)

I further checked the voltage from the negative terminal (same reading), then also checked the voltage with the contact breaker closed which read .86 volts

Now from reading the blogs on here and my Haynes manual. I'm supposed to get a 6 volt reading for the resistance wire and get a .2 volt reading for when the circuit breaker is closed.

Also I noticed the Ignition coil is written as a 12 volt on it. I attach photo's at the bottom, was a bit awkward holding e everything at once :P.

What I was thinking was replacing the the coil with a new one, but now i'm just confused  I've been suggested it could be the condenser that is the problem?

Here's the correct new coil at a very competitive price.

Also, read the description at the bottom of the listing page on how to test your coil and check if there is a resistance wire.

Hey do you really think it is just the coil?

And by the looks of it then, I have a ballasted coil 12v? so I can just change it in out,

I will test the Condenser/capacitor today just incase its got some loose wiring around it. Otherwise, bang easy!

Cheers, Francis
