Bad earth at near side Indicator

Postby meltdown » Wed Jun 18, 2014 10:36 am

Hi All

I have 2 questions to do with the indicators.

1, does anyone know if the indicator/side light bodies are being reproduced.
2, How do I go about stopping my sidelight glowing and thereby stopping my indicator from a, flashing & b, being very dim.

I've cleaned the terminals and replaced some wiring but it looks like the body that the bulbs are held in is past it's best.
I have no idea if this can be stripped down and repainted to cure it or not.

Oh and one last thing, are the rear lights handed? i.e is it a case of turning one upside down for it to fit the other side.
:thanx:
Cheers
Nick

Yes, the rear lights are handed.

The best way to solve the indicator/side light problem is to remove them and completely clean the housings and bulb holders. The earth problem is common, and easily solved by the soldering of a earth to the outside of the bulb holders and securing to the chassis via a bolt.

If the live feeds for the bulbs are due to corroded or flattened connections inside the bulb holder, then a dab of solder will wake it up and ensure a clean connection....

Then again, if you ain't no good with a soldering iron, they do every once in a blue moon come up for sale.

Thanks Dan

I'll have a go at taking them apart first.

I'll have to look what I've done on mine - as they're mounted on the fibreglass nosecone, there must be a separate earth wire. My guess is it runs from one of the mounting bolts to earth the light body, though I'm not sure.

A little concerned about the condition of the bulb holders themselves, where the bayonet sits has gone quite rusty.

Is there anything I can paint on them to treat the rust?
I'm guessing if i do this and and the earth wire they'll still work?

Lots of things you can do to remove the rust - if you can get the bulb holders off, soak them in citric acid diluted to 10% should get rid of it. If you can't remove them, I've been using "ph Down" (a hydroponics product that's basically phosphoric acid) to paint onto scabby bits of my roof and it's been quite successful at removing rust. I haven't tried it on electrical stuff but I can't see a problem as long as you make sure it's properly dried off before you switch them on again.

If the bulb holders are rusty that might be causing the original problem.
