Interesting that you had to adjust the timing quite a bit!
What qualifies as " quite a bit" ?, and was that advanced or retarded?

It was retarded by around 9 degrees. Only because the pickup is in a different spot to where the points used to open.

Great, that makes a lot of sense now. After fitting it ran like a bag of spanners.
When I loosened the dizzy and moved it around it became much smoother.
Timing light showed the pulley pointer way off to the left of the timing cover pointer, which didn't seem right!!.
Now you've said that though, I'm a lot happier. Thanks.
