1972 distributor??

Postby Viva Man » Wed Jul 24, 2019 9:20 pm

Hello,

I have got new parts for my 1972 1256 HC Viva Distributor but found they don't fit, after doing some digging, I found the distributor I have looks like a BOSCH version from a newer model. Can any one advise if there is a way to find out if is newer and would it have a reference number to identify the year?

Thanks

Your 72 should have an offset tang at the drive end for an offset oil pump, later 1256 had a centre drive which I would think the Bosch has which is why it will not fit,

Yes, post about 77 - 78 engines were fitted with a Bosch distributor. Mostly fitted to Chevettes. The Chevette stayed in production well into the 80's. They can be upgraded to full Bosch electronic ignition with a bit of ingenuity. Your car has probably been fitted with a later engine at some stage in the past.

Have you any photos of the engine? The obvious giveaways to it being a later engine are a large plastic breather cap on the oil filler cap and the long straight air filter on the Stromberg carb.

That's true Fred. I forgot to mention the colour of the cap.
