Anyone know about 2 speed wipers?

Postby jpsmit » Fri Feb 05, 2021 2:24 pm

For the GT.

Green is power (should be)
Black is ground (should be)

I presume from other interwebnet pics that

Yellow is fast
Red is slow

Is blue park?

Also the switch back - I expected a plug but is individual wires

what goes where?

thanks all!

On the back of my (69 Epic not GT) wiper switch there are 5 spade terminals. From the top:
1 Blue (fast)
2 Green (power)
3 Red (slow)
4 (Nothing plugged in here)
5 Yellow (park)

With the switch off (up) only Yellow and Red are connected.
With the switch on slow (middle) only Red and Green are connected.
With the switch on fast (down) only Green and Blue are connected.

It's kind of neat how it works. For slow or fast, the the motor gets power via the red or blue wires from the switch. (to different brush locations in the motor for slow or fast) Pretty straight-forward so far but when you switch the wipers off it gets interesting...
There's also a green (power) wire going to a contact in the motor that connects it to the yellow wire only when the wipers are not in the parked position. So, when you switch the wipers off, (assuming you don't time it perfectly when the wipers are in the parked position) the green power wire that goes to the contact in the motor is connected to the yellow wire that goes to the switch, which (being in the off position) is connected to the red wire which goes back to the motor giving it power to keep wiping! When the wipers make it to the park position, the contact in the motor between the green and yellow wires opens breaking the circuit so the wipers stop moving. Hope I got that right.

The motor is too well hidden for me to take a peek for you but Haynes says to make sure the correct leads are connected to the correct terminals.
1. Yellow
2. Red
3. Green
4. Blue
Earth tag - Black

This is enormously helpful - thank you!!!

I just had a look at my switch and the numbers don't seem to correspond

I have added a pic -

Top row (3 connectors) Left to Right - the spade connectors are numbered 2, 7, 8

bottom row - L to R - number 6, 4

any thoughts?

I so appreciate this!

cheers

Didn't notice the numbers molded on the back of the switch, I was just counting from the top to the bottom - and holding it 90°from how you were! Here they are again with the switch's numbers:
8 Blue (fast)
4 Green (power) *two green wires on one spade connector
7 Red (slow)
6 (Nothing plugged in here)
2 Yellow (park)

So very helpful! thanks. I managed to get the wiper motor working today, hurray! Didn't bother with the parking but, it all works. Not going to lie the high speed doesn't look to terribly different than the low speed but, I think that will come. I took the cover off the gear part and even the grease is still soft so, call that a win!

Hurray.
