1159 or 1256?

Postby Sweden » Sun Jan 08, 2006 9:45 pm

Hi,

1. I just bought a second HC from 1971, to do a transplant to my current 1975 HC. I'm planning to buy som gaskets and so on from ebay to restore the "new" engine, but I don't know how to figure out if I have the 1159 or the 1256 engine in the 71. The identity number of the car is 933111E411883. Or can I see it on the engine somewhere?

Thank's for the fast replies!

1256 it is! (When I found the numbers I couldn't believe that I had missed them earlier looking at the size of the 4 letters  ),

I also thought that it would be a 1159, but if I remeber correct it was during 71 Vauxhall moved from the 1159 to the 1256. (Or it could have a replacement engine, but I don't think so as the car has been in the same family since new)

Is there anything in particular that you would change on the engine before transplanting it to the "patient". It's clamed to have done 50000 kilometers (31000 miles).

1/. Why do you need to replace it?

The reason for changing it is that the engine I have today is an Opel 1.2 with an Vauxhall gearbox and in the middle there are a lot of welding done to get it to fit together. Now I have a problem with the clutch which needs to be fixed so i figured I would turn it back to what it ones was.

I would agree turning it back to what it was when built is a good idea!

I am guessing that your in Sweden?

If so do you have an engine? Dont forgte the club has access to a mountain of spares form Adrian Millar, and I am sure he will help you out if you need the odd bit and or a big bit.

We are always intrested in seeing what cars people have NO matter the condition or changes. The more the merrier.

Yes I have an engine, which is in the -71 (fortunatly a 1256) which will go in to my 75. I will at least change most of the gaskets, and probably more as it has been unused for the last 9 years. And you guessed right, I'm from Sweden.

Perfect that you have supplies if I cannot find it. At present NOTHING is avalable in Sweden, so all has to be ordered mainly from the UK. So far I have made some shopping on ebay.co.uk but to do that you have to be patient.

If you have anywhere to post pictures I would be happy to do so. (The 75 is in my logo)
