Rear Suspension HPF

Postby doss » Mon Jan 23, 2006 1:30 pm

I have seen the item below for Rear Shocks on E/Bay and am wondering if these are an option for my HPF and if they would be a good option or a poor substitute. the seller says that they will fit the HPF but I wanted to get some extra advice first before I bid on them. As when I got my HPF there were no shocks fitted so I am unsure of what they should look like as I have nothing to compare them to. Or has anyone got any info on a better source of shocks for my HPF. Ideally i would prefer to have adjustable shocks, are they out there ?

Item number: 4606842250

I cant see Ebay from here so I cant comment on that, but the best currently available new shock absorbers for the Viva range that I
know of are the AVO adjustables.

I've got Spax gas adjustables on mine, front and rear. I have heard bad stories about these, but had no problems myself. When I bought them for the rebuild, they were the only make I could get. I don't drive the car hard, though, it's mainly a polish special at the moment.

Spax's are good, I've still got them up front on mine but I didn't think you could still get them for the Viva anymore, hence the
reason I suggested the AVOs (same as I've got on the rear) which I know are still available.

Shocks

Postby hutchimr » Mon Jan 23, 2006 6:05 pm

There's a guy who sells shocks quite regularly on ebay from Berkhamsted, he only seems to do Motorcraft but has got me front and rear adjustables, might be worth keeping an eye out. Sorry can't remember his ebay name. I asked him to look out for adjustables for me and he mailed me back within 2 days and went over and picked them up. Will try to find his name.

I suggest another good make of adjustables to buy for Vivas - is GAZ.
Spax are a little bit agricultural, they are supposed to have 28 point adjustment but my experience is that you only have 2 adjustments - hard or soft!!! I reckon that Spax havent moved on with the latest developements in shock technology, - just relying on their name to make sales!
Gaz have 36 point Fine tune settings, Zinc plated Bodies, Double-lip seal, plus O ring on piston rod. Fully rebuildable and top quality. Each unit is tested and supplied wth individual Dyno read out. 3 year warranty & British made. They are usually cheaper than Spax, I give example price for pair for Triumph Spitfire:
Spax front £105 plus Vat GAZ 99.95 plus vat
Spax rear £96.50 plus vat GAZ 92. 50 plus vat
Hope this helps

I've used Spax's on a dozen cars and never discovered that "soft" setting
you just mentioned!
In my experience they go progressively from about 50% harder than stock up
to about 10x as hard :-)
Always did the job effectively though.
Now Koni's on the other hand I wasn't so impressed with. Only 3 settings,
soft, soft, and rock 'ard!
