Tell me about the 1159 engine

Postby rizzo » Sun Jun 18, 2017 4:14 pm

Since buying SXE758G ive noticed the oil warning light has been flickering on when at idle when the engine is hot, the engine runs sweet for the 10k it has covered and new oil and filter made no difference to the warning light, so a couple of questions, are the modern oil switch's any good? ie accurate, or would a nos be a better option and do these engines suffer from sludge in the oil strainers restricting flow?
As its a low mileage engine i dont think its likely to be worn bearings that are causing the problem but obviously need to deal with it asap. :D

Hi Rizzo
These engines dont usually suffer with clogged pickup oil starvation with a low mileage like yours try a new switch.

as above ^^^ or try checking the connections and wiring, in case something is loose or fraying.
Also fit a mechanical oil pressure gauge, that way you'll know what pressure your oil is at at all times.
Of course, it could always be your oil pump that is at fault, but if it's a rebuilt engine I would've thought it highly unlikely.

Hi Rizzo
As Fred says try oil pressure gauage many years ago i went to all the trouble of removing the engine fitted a new pump put it all back made no difference at all it had done more miles than yours.

Thanks chaps, testing the pressure is on my list of things to do when i get a minute, does anyone have a clue to the engine idle pressure? i think as a rule of thumb the oil light comes on at 5psi
I will try for a NOS switch or old aftermarket as generally the original stuff is better than the modern reproduction there churning out. :)
