Weber 32 ICT running rich

Postby Mike Attew » Fri Mar 23, 2018 6:00 pm

Bought this Viva off of Paul on here, he fitted a Weber 32 ICT carb which was jetted for the 1256. It is running very rich and sooting the plugs up, even after a180 mile drive. It used nearly 3/4 tank as well. Using a colour tune winding the mixture screw in or out is doing nothing, the engine speed doesn't alter and it stays bright orange. The engine is also hunting. If I rev the engine the colour tune does change to blue or blue / white but not a bunsen blue. Unfortunately at present I am out of ideas. It has electronic ignition although I think the distributor cap carbon is worn so I will replace that. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Hi Mike, I'm no expert on the ICT carb but the first thing I would check is the float level and the seating of the needle valve. Has Paul fitted an electric fuel pump too? It may need a regulator to keep it's pressure under check.

Thanks for the reply, mechanical pump but I will check the float. I will have to research the carb as Paul made a spacer to fit the air filter as the top was smaller than the Zenith so I am wondering is it getting the correct air flow? Something is amiss though. Nothing like a challenge but better rich than weak.

Having looked into this the Weber 32ICT is the wrong carb, it is for a Viva HA 1057. The correct Weber for the 1256 is a correct jetted Weber 34 ICH. This would also explain the smaller air filter connection. It's actually interesting learning about these as well.

Looking a bit further, the website says it IS for a 1256, but HA Van!!

Did the later vans have a 1256 fitted? I'm sure Steve will know!!

If not, and there is a mistake and it can be fitted to a 1057 HA, with jet adaptions I could be interested in purchasing it if you are disposing of it!!

Weber have replied to me and stated 1256cc HC 1971-73 Weber No 1529092000 34 ICH replaces Zenith 30IZ. Don't know why it would work on a HA 1256 van? and not on this. Weber make them so I guess they should know but why do they only list to 73?

After 73 Vauxhall changed over to the Stromberg carb which uses a different manifold. The Weber will not fit post 73 cars.

Ok, makes sense thanks. I also have here a side draught manifold with a couple of strombergs, one in bits.

Has anybody fitted an SU instead of a Stromberg?

Back in the day...... I fitted an SU 1 3/4" from a 1300 Marina with really good results. Can't remember the full details but had to modify the manifold and open it out a bit. I took my inspiration from Bill Blydenstien who in the latter years of the 70's preferred to fit the OHV engine with a 1.75 Stromberg than a Weber 28/36 DCD.

Certainly this conversion on a mate's car was a lot nicer to drive than the DCD I had my car and more economical.
