Had a look at the e. bay advert from Mike.
Don't think that this carb will fit an HA saloon, as the carb appears to have cable throttle and mine is a lever system.
Also the fuel intake is push on pipe whereas the HA one is screw in to the float chamber.
Not insurmountable problems but a lot of modifications on a chance that it works.
Worth looking at though if you had nothing else to offer, and a reasonable price!

Now at present have the old Zenith on and mix is good so ready for a test drive. I have had a look at the 2 Strombergs I have but they are not the original CD150's as they have what I believe is a cold start connection on the side so have no idea of the needle type etc.

Are the Stromberg a better carb than the downdraught? Would it be better to get an original type Stromberg?
1972nail, thanks for all the help.

In the 70's I did fit a Weber twin choke to my old Viva with a manifold conversion, memories are coming back :D

I had a weber (28/36 i think) on a 1300 gls back in the day... it went really well....but also drained the tank very sharpish. :(

Had many on strombergs and find them to be most forgiving in regards to drive-ability and economy, fairly easy to set up as well, just screw the jet in and out till its right...to be honest they don't need much more than the initial set up and you're good to go.

The zenith downdraught is also a pretty good carb, a good clean and a service and they do the job, I've not had much experience of the weber version, except on escort pop plus' way back in the day... and they were mostly junked in favour of the weber twin choke, which suits an escort down to the ground.
A viva likes a more 'civilised' carb in my opinion, simple but effective, those weber ruffians are more for the boy racers. . . .

Had a test drive and it didn't go that well, bit of kangeroo but also my strobe packed up so not sure on the timing, however I think I will give the stromberg a go. Nothing to loose.

As lord13 says the Stromberg is a very forgiving carb and once set up will perform very well for what it is. If you can find a Stormberg from a later car I would go for that.

This is on a '71 HC right? They were cable and not rod linkage like the HB's yes?

It should have a plate between the air cleaner and the carb, the cable connects to that. If you do have a rod linkage system, it is quite easy to convert to cable without damaging any of the components ( one hole needs modifying on a bracket that's all)so you can revert back if needed. I can send you pics of the conversion if required and a template of the plate for the carb. you should be able to sort it from there :)

Hi Lord13, Thanks for the reply, it is a cable connection. The Zenith is a connection on the left of the carb but the Stromberg I have it is on the right. If you could email a picture it would help please.
I shall be fitting the manifold today.

Here's a couple of pics of my set up, please ignore the 'temporary' fuel line and the 'temporary' bolt in the throttle linkage, I'll get around to replacing them soon ;)

Lord13, Thank you very much, I can see how it works now. I will have to adapt my bracket to fit. I came to a stop today though as I found I required 2 x longer UNC [ I think they are ] bolts. Will have to wait for my local nuts and bolts place to open on Tuesday.
