Stromberg expert.

Postby Mike Attew » Fri Apr 13, 2018 3:56 pm

I have been on Burlens site and they list the carbs through the years used and spares. What would be the difference between 73 to 76 B1DJ, 74 to 75 onwards B1DV, 77 to 79 B1EU, 78 to 79 B1FB metering needles. They all use the same jet.
I contacted Burlen but all they could say was they have different profiles and give different driving characteristics.
I think these were UK vehicles. Just confuses me especially when they use 2 types per year set.
Any help would be appreciated.

That's the problem with Stormbergs no one seems to know the differences between the needles. With SU's being so often used in tuned engines in the 60's and 70's there is a wealth of info on which needles do what. I have a list of Stromberg needles with profiles somewhere, I'll try to look it out.

I asked Burlen about an SU but they said they didn't do one. It would be nice to know what profile does what although it may not be noticeble.

I have a Haynes stromberg book that has an index with the various profiles and cross references - I tried to make sense of it all and couldn't but, PM me your email and I will email you a PDF and you can check for yourself.

Talk about a can of worms, reading this I don't think it would make much difference which type of needle is used especially on the narrow roads in Norfolk and pot holes. :D
Thanks for the info, I like to learn as it keeps the grey matter active.

I have just bought a replacement needle from Burlen for my early 1256 Viva. After some time "checking and comparing profiles" they recommended B1EU, double checking that it was an early engine. (That was a bit surprising because that needle is recommended for the last of the Vivas and some Chevettes). Several of the recommended needles are out-of-stock, which doesn't surprise me as there cant be a big demand for Viva specific needles.

The new stromberg they offered me also had that needle fitted, they said it was the one to use.
