Diff whine

Postby Of_Machines » Wed Feb 24, 2021 12:40 am

One of the next items on my list of things to get the car booked in for is that my car developed a whining noise last year, at first I thought it was a wheel bearing but was informed they were fine, I believe it's coming from the diff, I know that the filler plug and casing is leaking on it so could it have run low on lubricant and become worn out?

Is it a case of just needing an overhaul or is it likley I will need any new parts?

I know the car also needs a new UJ as it has been making a knocking sound for some time.
When I have this work carried out will the prop shaft need any attention too?

If it is leaking, then that probably means it is dry, which would cause a whine where gears mesh, so first off I would suggest removing the cover, fit new gasket if possible, or use some proper sealer, or thick grease to seal it when you bolt the cover back on, and refill with Hypoy gear oil. Check again.
If still noisy then yes the gears are probably damaged, and its a fairly major overhaul. Worth doing the front pinion seal at the same time if it comes to that.

The old 'con' trick was to put some sawdust in to the diff to quieten it!! naughty naughty, but DON'T do that!!

UJ replacement can be a bit fiddly, but not too bad providing they are circlip type. Props don't usually go out of balance but, if you think it might be then you need a specialist to re balance it ,and they could do the UJ at the same time.

In addition to what Bob has said adding Molyslipe https://www.molyslip.co.uk/ will help quieten things and protects the gears/bearings if the diff runs dry.
