Not quite there yet, but, the gasket that goes between the bell housing and the gearbox - does it go on dry or do I need sealant?

thanks all

Normally dry, but a bit of light grease will hold it in position while you join the two units together. There shouldn't be any oil in that area anyway, unless there is a leak from crankshaft rear main seal or gearbox front seal!

Thanks Bob! BTW does anyone know why there is a gasket? Doesn't seem to do anything?

On a position like that it is to take up any surface irregularities that exist between the two machined surfaces. Both parts being cast iron they couldn't spec a very high surface flatness for those parts and a quick skim and a gasket was probably the cheapest option.

Also both components being cast iron a gasket between would prevent rusting and seizing together, cast iron doesn't take kindly to being heated or hammered to get items apart.
