greasing water pump

From the Haynes Manual...
"Once every 12,000 miles unscrew the plug from the top of the water pump and press in by hand a little grease. Do not overgrease or the seal may be rendered inoperative. Replace the plug and screw down."

A little grease is a bit vague... Looking in the hole in the top of my waterpump, I see no grease at all. I assume they don't want you to use too much so that the grease doesn't get on the seal and ruin the rubber, but I've read that silicon grease (like that used on moving brake components) doesn't affect rubber. Could I squish in good amount of this?

All the bearings are sealed for life so there is no option to add any lubricant
