1978 1256 HC Exhaust downpipe

Hello all,
I got as far as page 30 of the 181 where "exhaust" is mentioned on the forum.
Query is how much stripping has to be done to fit a down pipe -I cut the original off and am now
finding it difficult to fit replacement. Tips from anyone with previous experience in this job would be appreciated. Does steering rack have to be removed-engine mountings loosened etc.
