Speedo not working on 1256 1978 GLS

Postby wyke » Fri Apr 14, 2006 7:21 pm

Speedo stopped working.
Clicked for a couple of days - now nothing !
Seven dial dash - does it have a non standard cable as it seems to go in at 90 degrees.
How do you tell if it is cable or dial system that is faulty ??

Is it a standard cable as I have the chance of a viva speedo cable on e-bay , are they all the same ?

I thought they were different on the 7 dials dash. The standard speedo cable goes straight in to the back of the speedo - coming through the opening immediately behind the dash itself, whereas the 7 dials comes in from the side to link up to the elbow.

From recollection, the 7 dials version is longer. I also remember trying to connect up a 7 dials dash in a standard viva and the cable wouldn't reach.

Over 15 years since I had a GLS, so memory might be playing tricks.

The seven dial dash speedo cable is longer than standard by about a foot. If memory serves it's the same cable as used on the Magnum. (Same instruments)

The ticking sound was probably the corners of the squared of cable slowly rounding off at the gear box end due to a poorly lubed up core against the sheeth.
Sometimes, I wonder why I bother, and then for one fleeting moment things will go right for a change.
