Need some axle help.

Postby Tigran » Wed Jun 14, 2006 10:22 pm

Hey dudes and dudettes - how long would a 1300 diff with an uprated prop last with 100bhp to play around with? I am guessing not all that long (no big starts or anything) so this leads me onto the next Q - anyone have the foggiest about how much bigger a carlton axle is compared to a viva item.

Thanks for any input guys n galls.

I put about 100bhp though an HA axle for 6 years and never broke it. Includes standing and rolling burnouts. Now the same poor old axle is having to deal with about 300lbs torque in the HA..... and it still has not broken. If you don't sky the revs and dump the clutch, I expect it will last a fairly long time.
No idea on Carlton axle.... will be too wide is my guess, the wheels won't fit, and I have a hankering is an IRS anyway......

Ooooh that's good news, will sort out a proper axle later - just need something which will work for a month or two with that power.

Thanks for the help.

I am guessing that a magnum and or firenza 2.3 axle would do the job a lot easier than trying to get a carlton axle to fit.

also you gona need to uprate the front suspension as the normal 1159 / 1256 front axle isnt realy up to the job of a 2.3 engine.

Oh it's not the 2.3 going in.

I would love to stick a viva gt axle in - but I have never seen one advertised anywhere. Ever.

I've had several people telling me my axle is going to fall apart but it hasn't yet. I have about 110 bhp (haven't fitted the twin carbs yet) from a 2.3 driving a 1256 rear axle. It wheelspins easily in 3rd gear, doesn't need 1st gear, so I drive it like a loony all the time. My car is lighter than a Viva so maybe that puts less strain through the transmission. Can't imagine anyone driving it harder though, unless on a race track.

The 1256 axle does give amazing acceleration but there are downsides. The speedo is miles out and the top speed is about 75mph as the 1256 revved over 6,000rpm and the 2300 struggles over 5,000rpm. I daren't work out the fuel costs, I just know its real bad.

Has anybody any tips on how to sort out the speedo?

Regards

Mark
