fuel pump probs?

Postby griffonmark » Wed Jul 05, 2006 7:22 pm

My kitcar fitted with a 2,300 engine broke down last night for the first (and I suspect not the last) time. There was no fuel in the SU carb float chamber. The glass bowl of the fuel pump was half full but no fuel came out. I hadn't run out of fuel. I had to limp it home filling the float chamber every 1/2 mile. When I got home I revved the engine and fuel seemed to just reach the filter in the bowl, but what suprised me was the amount of bubbles in the fuel entering the bowl. Is there anyone out there who has a glass bowl fuel pump that can tell me what it should look like when running. The fuel bowl has been a problem for some time as the fuel drains out of it after a week or so standing. Can I replace the fuel pump with an ordinary non glass one?

I run a 2.3 with this pump.

The fuel should not drain back, the non-return valves have gone.
Repair kits appear on ebay from time to time.

There should not be bubbles in the bowl, there is an air leak into the system from somewhere. Check all the fuel pipes.
Although it is possible if both the non-return values have failed that it's sucking air back from the carb. Or the main diaphram is punctured.

You can fit a non-glass pump, not sure which model though.

If you do replace it can I have the old one :D

Fuel pumps

Postby ADRIAN » Thu Jul 06, 2006 10:09 am

I have new fuel pumps in stock, some rare original glass bowl type at £18 or Moprod non original no glass bowl at £15. Plus postage. Bringing to Billing . If you just want a repair kit, try gettiing a kit from a Ford specialist, a kit for a Ford Zephur & Zodiac which use exactly the same pump but just uses a different arm.

Thanks for all the advice, obviously the pumps knackered.

Adrian you drive me bonkers. We've had several chats and you've denied all existence of a glass feul pump, now you tell me you've not only got them in stock but a repair kit as well! Aaaarrgghhh. If you'd told me earlier I'd have already replaced it and wouldn't have broken down. It's all your fault. I'm going to tell my wife and she'll sort you out - big ugly brute of a woman.

I can't make Billing due to family commitments so if I can get home early enough I'll give you a ring one night.
