Spotted on ebay Sept 2010:
A 1973 Bedford Ha van that has been converted to a Bedford Beagle Estate. Has had three previous owners from new and has covered just over 72,000 miles. This mileage can be confirmed from the extensive history file that comes with the vehicle that includes most MOT certificates. Vehicle is registered to me and I have the V5.
Van was registered on 5/3/1973 and therefore is classified as a historic vehicle and tax exempt - you do need to apply for a free licence however. Vehicle is currently Sorn having been taken off the road in 2007.
The vehicle was converted into its current Beagle configuration in 1983 /1984 with all works being undertaken by a qualified motor engineer (owner at the time) using donor windows and rear fold flat seat from a Martin Walker Beagle that was being scrapped. Interior was re- trimmed, roof lining installed and seats recovered. New seat belt fixings and a Kenlowe fan were also fitted. Fan has been removed but all wiring and switch is still present and the fan will come with the vehicle so can be refitted if required - manuals for the fan are in the history file. Vehicle was run until 1986 then put into storage and a refund of road fund licence was claimed - paperwork to show this. It was put back on the road in 1993. History via Mot certificates is as follows:
1977 - 14,620 miles. 1978 - 15984 miles. 1979 - 18730 miles. 1980 - 19882 miles. 1981 - 21530 miles. 1982 - 23717 miles. 1983 - 26515 miles. 1984 - 29634 miles. 1985 - 33260 miles. 1986 - 35762 miles. 1993 - 39007 miles. 1994 - 51682 miles. 1995 - 58646 miles. 1996 - 59857 miles. 1997 - 60379 miles. 1998 - 61373 miles. 1999 - 63003 miles. 2000 - 64011 miles. 2001 - 65157 miles. 2002 - 66306 miles. 2003 - 67690 miles. 2004 - 68254 miles. 2005 68778 miles. 2006 - 68960 miles.
History file contains invoices, receipts from 1970’s through 1980’s, Mot certificates to 2006/07, tax discs and various correspondence/ drawing relating to the conversion etc.
Vehicle’s body panels are basically sound, showing only minor marks and little signs of rust apart from the bottom of the drivers door (see pic) and to a much lesser extent the passenger door. Bonnet has some small rust holes on the front and the cross member needs spot welding back in situ so that the bonnet will sit flush with the wings (see pic) . Off side wing has had some repairs to the front corner at some point and this needs some further work but otherwise all is ok.
Chassis rail appears to be rot free as far as I can tell. No leaks through the windscreen or rusting out of the rear doors. Has a small scrape to the paint on the rear passenger side (see pic ). Paintwork is a little flat in places and needs a good t-cut and then polish to bring back its depth. Missing one wing mirror.
Interior needs the following attention - recovering of passenger seat, new interior light, additional retaining clips/screws for all four door cards.
Mechanically the vehicle needs the following doing to make it road worthy: -
Fitting of new master brake cylinder, removed old one but never got round to fitting new one, - new master cylinder will come with the vehicle.
New battery and windscreen wiper blades
New radiator needs to be sourced and fitted - currently have a temporary fix using a viva car radiator. This was done so that I could keep the engine turned over after the old rad gave up the ghost a year or so back.
New fuel pipe from the fuel pump to the carb.
Replacment covers on reversing lights.
Service with new plugs/points - engine does turn over but is not firing as fuel pipe needed as mentioned above
Vehicle has good tyres with plenty of tread on them as they were purchased in 2006 and have only done a couple of thousand miles. Stainless steel exhaust was fitted in 1979 and this is still going strong. No oil leaks and the engine was a good runner with no known problems. Gearbox was also smooth with no whines or clunks when changing gear.
Basically this vehicle is a sound basis for an enthusiast, who wants a good restoration project that doesn’t involve the need for hundreds of pounds of expenditure and hours and hours of labour. Once the work outlined above is undertaken (and anything else that is identified once works begins) you will have a practical classic that will be turning heads. However it does need the work as identified above, so please do not have illusions that it is a two minute fix either.
I also have a range of spare parts that will be available to the winning bidder, by separate negotiation, if required.
