SORN it. When the transfer of ownership was done you have two choices only, tax it or SORN it. If you fail to do either DVLA will come after you, also they'll come after you for failure to insure the car if not on SORN.
So, SORN it and avoid the hassles!

Thanks for all of the responses here.
It turns out I had no choice. I didn't get around to SORNing it quickly and got a reminder letter basically warning me that I had to. It is on SORN now.
