Spares Availability

Postby gurrier » Tue Jun 07, 2022 11:41 am

Hello all,

I had the surprising experience of being told by Vauxhallgreenparts that they had plenty rocker cover gaskets in stock when I enquired about being supplied with one - but that they do not ship to the EU.

It is unfortunate that a business specialising in supplying parts for a single Make and who state on their website that they ship worldwide should have such a policy.

I have luckily sourced a significant number of items on ebay and sent parts for reconditioning to the UK with excellent customer experiences in all cases.

Regards,

That does seem a bit strange, and they could at least update the web site to reflect their new shipping policy, but then they're still talking about being open for business "during this crisis" on there so perhaps they're having issues getting it changed.

I've had mixed results sending things to Ireland - one parcel of panels went through without any trouble, and the next - to the same person, sent using the same courier - just came back marked "rejected by customs" with no further information, and no contact details to find out what had gone wrong. Maybe they've had similar issues and decided to leave it for a bit "while things settle down".

As Mike says sending parts to Ireland has prove to be a problem. I sent a part to a member in Ireland last Autumn and it to was rejected without explanation. It was delivered back to me about 2 months later - this was using Royal Mail!
The problem was solved by delivering to his brother in the UK and he got it next time they met.

Thanks for the replies,

What happens here is that items are now held by the Postal Service or the Parcel Delivery Company. The Customs decides the amount of Import duty payable. They notify the Postal Service/Parcel Delivery Co. who notifiy the consignee of the amount of Import tax that is payable (seems to be a standard rate of approx 23% which happens to be a base rate of V.A.T. payable on anything bought locally) The consignee then has to pay this amount, within a specified time frame before the item can be delivered.

As we all know the more people that are involved in a transaction the more likely there is to be delay/mistakes.

Ebay have introduced a Global Shipping Program which includes the expected Import Tax within the first transaction.

It may well be that the problem is this side of the water as the method of notification of amount due appears to vary between email and letter post. Possibly a case of falling between two stools.

Vauxhallgreenspares did say that their policy was no dispatch to the EU so more than Ireland is involved.

In the final analysis something we will have to leave to the Politicians to sort out.

I guess the main problem is the lack of proper documents....As in all export shipments a commercial or a proforma invoice is necessary. It does not matter what you send or where. The procedure is the same all over the world.
Most often time consuming so that is why some companys refuse to send on export. Larger companys have staff preparing such documents all day long....

In the case of my returned parcel, I provided the documentation requested by the parcel company. I don't remember what that was, but it was what they asked for. As I mentioned, it wasn't the first time I'd sent a parcel to the same customer in the same location, the first went through, the second did not. It was returned to me quite quickly, in fact - a little too quickly for anything to have timed out due to no response.

I had the currently extraordinary experience of buying a set of inertia reel seatbelts for mine on ebay from a UK supplier. I actually received them three days after placing the order. The best I have otherwise managed was a ten days turnaround. Unfortunately I have had as many refusals to accept offers to purchase as I have had successfull
purchases. I even had a refusal to do business from Northern Ireland. Amazing experience to have vendors advertising items for sale and then segregrate who can purchase.

Bill,

Should you be desperately stuck for a part let me know, if it can by any chance come into Northern Ireland we can sort out getting it over the border to you

I've had a customs issue sending stuff to Eire - one parcel to a chap went through without any trouble, then a few months later another similar parcel to the same person using the same courier was returned to me with "rejected by customs" stickers on it and no further explanation. I have to shoulder the cost of the freight there, so if I try again using a different courier, I run the risk of losing yet more money.

I wouldn't mind so much, but it's the inconsistency and lack of information. Did I pack it wrongly, was the paperwork incorrect? No way to find out, but both were done just the same on both packages. I suspect issues like that are why some suppliers are choosing not to export.

HC Fairley-Droopsnoot,

Many thanks for your comments. With no affiliations whatsoever on my part - I was informed by a supplier that many Couriers are not willing to transport specifically car parts-reason unknown - but that Fed Ex (comparably apparently the most expensive courier to use) do. Incidentially instances that I have had a good turn around have been through Fed Ex. May be it a case of getting what you pay for.
