Car Birthdays

Postby pbottomley » Fri Nov 03, 2006 12:47 pm

Having started to re assemble some data about Viva's I noticed each car has a birthdate... e.g. my HC was Born on December 1st 1970, therefore should i celebrate its birthday with a cake and ice cream?

What have others done to celebrate yuor cars birthday ? thrown a party, given it a wash? or kicked the thing ?

Is the date of birth the date the car was rolled off the production line, or is it the day that the car was first registered?

Is there any way of finding out the date of manufacture of our cars? I for one would love to find out when my HB's were made.

I once had a ford escort mk1 and its date of first registration was on my birthday. I knew where the car was first sold from, so went to that garage on that day and had the car serviced there.

My car was brought on the 23rd May 1964 by my great uncle. Seeing as that day is my birthday (only lots of years later) and I got the cake on that day as a birthday gift I always have cake! 8)
Three cars, two fire engines, one steam roller, a wheelchair, and various sized hammers.... what could go wrong?!

Thanx for that, the DVLA want you to pay for everything. I am still waiting for my log-book to come back after buying the silver HB estate. I went to the local VRO last week to try to gain a refund on the road-tax on the car, as it was paid for by the previous owner. The chap behind the counter told me that as I had no log-book, he could not verify that my car was historic. I told him that all he had to do was check on his computer to see the date that the car was first registered and then he would know that the car is supposed to be historic. He told me that If I wanted to change the car to historic, then I first had to pay £19 for a replacement log-book before he could change the car over and untill it was changed over to historic, he would not accept my application for a re-fund on the road-tax. I can not send the road-tax off to Swansea to the DVLA, as I do not yet have a Log-book to re-tax the car with. Which ever way you look at it, DVLA have got me and my money.

Car Birthdays

You might be able to find out the date of build for free. If your car is original and untouched then look under the rear carpets for a small piece of paper. This is the factory build sheet and it will tell you all you want to know. I have found it there on both my HC's and some of my old Chevettes too. If no luck here the back of the door trims are normally date stamped, this is not as accurate but will tell you to within a few days. Also sometimes you can find a tag on the wiring loom behind the dash with a date on. Matt.

Actually you can tell the age of triplex windows by some over complicated series of marks by the triplex logo which I can't remember at the minute. Although this isn't much use for aging a car accurately its just one of those useless things I (half) know.

I don't know how the DVLA could tell you when a car was made as they rely on info the dealer tells them when a car is first registered and the form doesn't ask for a specific date of manufacture. Even if it did, the dealer probably wouldn't know. Then you have a problem knowing when the build was completed. Was this several weeks after the car dropped of the production line and sat in a field waiting for the alloys wheels? was it when a factory inspector finally got round to signing it off as complete?

I did come across quite a few cars in my career that were over a year old before they were registered as new. In fact, there are still some Rovers yet to be sold as new cars even though production stopped ages ago. However, cars are not as bad as bikes. Last year I was offered a 3yr old Thundercat from Canada as brand new, very cheap though. Last month there was a Z650 SR on ebay that was 25 years old before it was registered!

Car Birthdays

If you talk to Vauxhall heritage and give them the VIN ( number at the bottom of the windscreen, passenger side) they will be able to tell you when it was manufactured and will send you a dating certificate. I was trying to find out when the red 2300 which Steve Hammond bought off me was built.
It turned out to be 2nd week of Jan 73 - I was so frustrated that it was so close to tax exempt I did not pursue it any further!!!
