My HB 1660 crossflow runs.....

Postby yoeddynz » Mon Oct 19, 2009 10:00 pm

This is the car i bought yonks ago and then put on the back burner after taking on my mazda RX3 and restoring that instead...

http://www.vauxhallviva.com/vivaforum/v ... ght=#25889

I sold the RX3 recently but as it caused me no realiability problems at all (i miss it soooooo much) I have been whittling away on the Viva.

Not at all up to my usual speed on a car job but oh well. anyway- i have got it almost completely sorted for an Mot and cant wait to get it on the road. shame is I'm heading back to NZ on 8th Dec so wont enjoy it long...

not sure to sell it here or take it to NZ.

I really do wish i rotorised it too... as working on a piston engine after owning several rotarys now is a bit too much effort. Very complicated compared to rotarys and no where near as smooth... But possibly this ford engine might be a bit cheaper to run...? although i was getting an easy 28mpg with rx3!

The crossflow does sit in really nice in there -and looks the part.

anyway- just fitted a cheap but very powerful audi electric fan this weekend and found out why engine had a flat spot...some had removed the spring from behind accelerator pump on the twin choke weber.! now runs really well - needs a nice thrashing!

some quick photos..

That looks nice and neat, well done. Any pics of the rest of the car?

cheers. It does slot in there nicely.:) easy conversion but i've just been slack. Sorting out final bits like indicators that are not earthed etc then off for mot. I'll get some pictures this weekend and put them up. Must get better wheels!

Hi, When you fitted the engine did it go straight in or did you change anything ?
I am having problems with the engine and gearbox in my Viva and these ford lumps seem to be plentiful
Did you use the escort gearbox as well?
Also exhausts for Viva are hard to find did you use the ford exhaust?
Sorry about all questions but want to start using my Viva sooner rather than later.

Hiya Bill,
I've moved the thread to here...

http://www.vauxhallviva.com/vivaforum/v ... hp?t=10258

The ford engine goes in sweet as. I just cut a little notch out of the baulkhead lip to clear the posh rocker cover i had. But engine could have been mounted a litttle further forwards instead. Mountts line up nicely with the viva cross member. I used the escort engine mounts- cut and rewelded to suit and new 40mm thick engine mount rubbers from Burton products.

The gearbox is the standard mk1/mk2 4speed (lovely boxes- sweet shift) and its mount sat directly above the viva gearbox cross member! It couldnt be much easier!

Hi Thanks for letting me know, If I cant get the original engine to run I will put the Kent engine and box in easy way out,

What prop did you use did you make any modifications to it?

I bought the car of Ebay with a full MOT seller stated DRIVE away, I had to get it delivered so couldnt test it out. After taxing it went for a drive No clutch, brakes scary engine lumpy cant get above 30 mph, exaust patched up and blowing the screen rubbers leaking ect
Fitted conplete new clutch, ordered a screen rubber Fitted new brakes (drum all round) and new cylinders
Need a gearbox and sort engine out,
decided the easy route would be to fit kent engine and box and uprate brakes
the cheaper option
The body of the car is good only needing minor work (undoing the sellers botches)
But I am still happy with the car and I will get it sorted and back on the road.
