1256 HC Radiator

Postby michaelHC » Wed Nov 25, 2009 2:42 pm

I've been having bother recently with my radiator and want to replace it. It's been losing a lot of water, and no matter how many times i bleed the system through etc, its sweet for a few weeks, then its back to square one. :?

So anyway, as i'm going to be using it for a bit of historic rallying, are there any easy upgrades to the radiator, using one from a different car? Has anyone here put an alloy one in 8) ? I will be rebuilding a 1256 engine for the car which hopefully will have about 80bhp and will rev high, so i'm guessing i'll need a better radiator with this engine?

Any help/advice greatly appreciated! :D

Have a look in the scrappies at the Merc 190 range.
Especially the non autos.
Alloy crossflow rads and cheap enough to buy new from Euro Car Parts.
Also the older C class (124) as is much like the 190.

Boyd :)
Please don't sell me a Viva. I'll just ruin it.

A good standard rad will be good enough even for a tuned 1256. Best bet is to remove the engine driven fan and fit an elec one. Rads come up on ebay now and again. Or get your own recored.

thats useful stuff. i'lll take a trip to the scrappy and see what they look like.

i had thought about getting my existing one re-cored - how much does that normally cost? also thought about the electric fan - anyone got pics of how to do this? and what fan to use?

cheers,
Michael

I bought a recon radiator off a company that sells them on e-bay £48.00 plus p+p, i was a bit unsure about having one that cheap, but its been a great buy and definatly a good rad, i have a 90 bhp engine which likes to be screamed and it still never goes above 80 deg. so i recommend them .

Give me a run down on your 90bhp engine! :D

And what fan to use with the standard radiator?

Went to the scrappy today and eyed up a few rads with fans already on - one suitable one from a newish 1.3 proton compact caught my eye - any probs with using one with a water bottle?

I can get that done for you via either Sercks or Advanced Rads .. Plus I might have a spare rad in the loft you can have too , to play around with .
