Some of you have seen this on RetroRides but for the rest of you here's how i grafted a type 9 onto my 1256.

First up, big thanks to Steve (SL1256) on here for giving me his old broken box which i gutted and cut....

:D

Then it was over to the mill so i could get it square

Image

Seeing as the type 9 gearbox center bore is 112mm the viva bellhousing needed a bit of a bore. So, set it up on a faceplate in the lathe. Remember that it has to be spot on central!

Not much meat left!

Next i had to weld a plate on the back to space it out so the length dimentions are the same as the Viva. Also i could use the plate to bolt the bell housing to the type 9.

Image

Clutch wise i went for an early Sierra plate as it's near enough the same diameter as the Viva plate. Had to open out the flywheel just a touch and the springs on the pressure plate.

Image

Fork is also a mix but boxed for extra strength..

Image

Anyway, fits ok on the bench.

Image

and although it's snug, i wont have to cut the floor for size....

Image

But length is another matter! A big 5" matter.

Image

I can shorten the tailshaft on the box by 3" which is where i'm at now so the hole in the floor will have to go back slightly but the lever should clear the handbrake. I've made a new crossmember using the original holes and still have a propshaft to sort.

Hopefully when i get my cylinder head back from the shop i'll be ready to go.

Fingers crossed

Wow :D - some great engineering work there - nice workshop!
I hope this all works ok , from your workshop skills it looks like it should
Just goes to show that with some imagination and decent facilities- amything is possible.
Cheers - Jon

Cheers guys,

Steve, i've sent you a PM about the prop on retrorides although i'm tempted to cut the one that was on mine now. Let me know what you think.

Jon, the workshop isn't mine i'm just lucky enough to be able to borrow it from work in my own time. Had the last 3 days off and spent most of it in there  There's only so much Jeremy Kyle i can take.

I'll be looking into getting an alloy bellhousing cast from this one to make it a bit lighter. If i can find someone to do it i'll get some extra done and your names on one Paul. There's still a lot of fabrication work to do after the bellhousing though.

I put my spare box together today with 3" chopped out of the remote. Just got to swap the tailhousing and selector shaft onto the good box now and i can start cutting the floor to suit. Hopefully my cylinder head will be done next week and i can get this rolling under it's own power.
