Is the Type 9 the one as fitted to Sierras and Capris with the Pinto engines? If so, I'll be praying my parents haven't thrown mine out :D

As long as its 5speed and has a removable bellhousing then its a Type9. If its got a 'box&bellhousing in one piece then its a MT75 but i dont think ford fitted them to the pinto.

Great work on the g'box dude, did Si weld it up for you?

Got a bloke on the trading estate to do it in the end. He said it wasn't nice to weld.

mt75 were only on the last of the sierras and granadas after the pinto was defunct

Im planning a similar gearbox jobbie but with an mt75. Cut the bellhousing off and make it flat to bolt my 2.3 slant bell housing on to it.

Will there be enough meat to tap a thread into? I've seen adaptor plates to fit a type 9 onto these engines using the original bellhousing so i'd imagine you'll need quite a thick spacer to make it work.

Cut my prop today after a lot of "do i, dont i" so there's no going back now.

Gents,

Think that this is the adaptor plate you need off of e-bay.

Would imagine that a ford clutch would be needed as well ? and poss a different flywheel bearing to accept the ford input shaft ?

Not me....Ive repaired tooooo many type9s to bother with one of them. I have a collection of MT75s (repaired many of them too but mainly due to severe abuse) though the snag is the bellhousings part of the gearbox casing, so the plan is cut it off at the required length, weld on a plate and bolt the 2.3 slant bell housing on. Very similar to whats been done here.

You only need a ford cluch plate of the same diameter is the original. Use the vaux cover.

Just wondering, but can the spigot be turned down to fit the Viva, without losing strength?

The spigot on the type 9 is the same as the 1256, not sure about the bigger engines though. I think you'd be lucky to turn one as the whole shaft is rather hard. You may be able to grind it? Either way you'll need to strip it out. If it is slightly bigger/smaller i'd look into making a new bush to suit.

I've always thought the type 9 was stronger than the MT75? I've got one on the back of the 2.9 in my Anglia and that's been down the 1/4 mile many a time without fail. Certainly wont be breaking it with a 1256 anyway
