Don't use a V6 or a Rover... If this mod were carried out, use a SBC!
What the hell is that?

Ok worked it out but i think your wrong, especially when you come to a corner, its very heavy compared to a V6 or Rover. I have pics of some V8 conversions if you want to go that way.

It is heavier... Unless you go for the lighter alloy block.

Power to weight ratio is FAR better than the V6 and rover. Alloy heads, intake and water pump will knock off about 100lbs! making it only 120lbs heavier than the V6.

Anyone who wanted to go the V8 route obviously wants more performance. The Small block has to be the way! Cheap, available, and VERY tuneable for not a lot of money.

If the motor ever let go in my little Vauxhall, I would strongly consider the small block, with an auto.

Chevrolet Firenza's/Viva V8's

Postby Sid » Fri Feb 17, 2006 10:51 am

I *have* seen a Firenza with a big block Chevy engine in it, but I'm glad to say I never saw it attempt to go round a bend :-)
Having got a Ford V6 in my own Viva and knowing how unbalanced this makes the car I certainly wouldn't advise adding another 150lb
with an SBC, as nice as the prospect of 5.7 litres might sound. The lightweight Rover V8 is unquestionably a better upgrade for a
Viva as it only weighs the same as the stock 1800 lump. Rover engine can easily be tweaked up to 250BHP which is more than enough
for such a lightweight car.

Arguably you might get away with the SBC if you were to fit a Jag IRS at the rear to balance the weight better and give more axle
control.
I had the Jag IRS on my old V6 HC and that actually handled a *lot* better than a standard Viva, though 205s were essential on the
front to stop understeer, whereas my HB with the same engine but a stock magnum axle, and only room for 185s up front, understeers
badly and is very twitchy when pushed hard as the rear axle twists all over the place.

> making it only 120lbs heavier than the V6.

Yeah, but the Rover V8 engine is 120 lbs *lighter* than the Ford V6, and what you'll lose in overall power to weight ratio (compared
to the SBC) you'll more than make up on the handling, unless you're purely building a drag racer.

Don't get me wrong, I think the SBC is the best all-round engine on the planet, but even the alloy-head version is too heavy for a
Viva in the standard location.
