House is doing conversions of the Ford Type 9 5-speed gearbox to fit the 1256cc engines. These 'boxes are fitted to the Pinto as standard, so might be able to get one of these adapted for your GT.

Some GT's have been fitted with 5-speed boxes from the Droopsnoot(HPF) Firenza. Expensive.

Is the conversion expensive or the transmission expensive or both?

The gearboxes fetch a lot of money because they're also suitable for rally Escorts and Sunbeams.

I have a type 9 in my garage that I have no intention of using, but it would be difficult to get it over to you. It's been stored on it's bellhousing for several years. Anyone planning a trip to Canada and fancy putting it in their luggage?

The slant engine gearboxes have a bolt on bellhousing dont they? I have seen adaptor plates so they can be bolted to a type 9 but i dont think anyone makes them anymore. Wouldn't be much of a challenge to make it work.

Adaptor plates for this conversion quite often appear on e-bay for around £90.
Had a look just now but can't see any available, someone may know who it is that sells them, they are new manufactured ones.

I presume the adapter is for the T9 transmission? does it involve much cutting?
