Fitting as Volvo 240 axle with a four link kit

Postby iwilko » Tue Oct 16, 2012 11:09 pm

I have recently purchased a Volvo 240 rear axle due to being very close in width to the standard Viva axle and having the advantage of the disc brakes. Has any one fitted this axle to a Viva?? Im hoping to four link the axle and fit a panhard rod, Has anyone fitted a four link kit to a Viva?? Think the best option unless anyone has any better ideas is to buy a escort kit from Rally Designs and adapt.
Any help would be great.

To give you hope, someone has done it I've been told. But I don't know who. I can only suggest forum and google searches.

P.s. please start a thread for the conversion with plenty of info and pictures, I'd like to see it in progress.

Have heard that some one else has fitted a Volvo axle in the past but cant find any info on this. When i work out how the axle will fit i'll post some progress pics (if i work it out!!)
I will try and track down that user and see if they have some information. Thanks for your help.

I did that. But i did it with Viva´s original fourlink. It´s not ready yet. I try to find pictures how i did the upper links.

Many thanks for the pictures.

Im very tempted to addapted the volvo axle to the standard viva four link like you have, but i would still really like to fit a escort kit with panhard rod.

Someday i will do the same. Or if that my thing works good enough in roads. I am not sure what (inspection man? :D ) say to fourlink kit in Finland. Because theres not good place under the rearseat (no chassis, only sheet metal). Maybe little bit of reinforcement do the job. And thats in here Finland i am not sure what you can do to the cars in Britain.

We dont have the same indepth inspections in the UK as i belive you do. As long as the veichle is safe and fit for the road it will pass are MOT test.

Is your viva lowered?? and have you had to increase the size of your diff tunnel to accommodate the larger Volvo diff??

This is interesting, It has all been done under a different name, If my memory of Linage of Parts is correct, Read---- Chrysler -Jag,- Scimitar- Volvo, all derivatives of the Dana 44, I think the volvo is a metric axle, but there are carry overs between all of them, the shafts on the Jag/scimitar 4ha have bolt on flanges, which makes them different, the Dana/4ha can be found all over the place, have a look under Bamford dumper trucks, they have a really narrow 4ha,
Can you get it low?, I think the top arms will have to be altered so they dont interfere with the chassis rail, Im making scratch built ones and running a panhard bar, although the scimitar axle has the facility to use a watts linkage
A rotter and a scoundrel, :)
