175/75R13 onto Standard HC steel rims

Postby VampireTigger » Mon Aug 07, 2017 11:05 am

Is this possible?

I used to run that size tyre on Rostyle on my previous Viva but I'd prefer to retain the original look rims for the car I just purchased as it is very original. Yes, I know the wider tyre is not original but I found in the past the back end was a lot more stable with the extra width.

I'm probably going to go with current generation Michelins as I've been running Michelins on my Audi A4 for a decade and found them an excellent tyre. It's a compromise between originality and practicality where I prefer the car on the road and not in a hedge!

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I would say that it is possible but not desireable. The extra width on the standard rim will create a bit more 'balooning' of the sidewall. This in turn makes the side wall more flexible causing a loss in feel as the rim moves about more over the centre of the tyre on cornering. Modern low profile tyres of 50, 45 and 40 % profile are specifically chosen to give more feel with the extra width that is desired by modern owners.

There are 175/50 profile tyres but they are too small and will lower the gearing too much. Straight 165/80 profiles are very close to the rolling diameter of the original 5.20 crossplies fitted to the early Delux cars and will give a slight increase in gearing over 155's, however you will still get increased sidewall flex over the 155's.

You could also considering getting the original wheels banded from the original 4 1/2" to 5 or 5 1/2 inches and then fit the 175/70's.

Thanks for the advice.

If I can get a modern day tyres in 155R13 think that could be my best move? I wouldn't have any extra width but a modern tyre should have more grip than what I had 25 years ago.

You can buy Michelin XAS at almost £200 each but there are other alternatives.

& of course I actually originally meant 175/70R13, having double checked I think that was the standard size on the wider RoStyle rims. Please tell me if I'm still wrong!

It's going to the body shop to have the filler in the front passenger wing replaced with metal and a bit of tidying such as removing the rust marks on the rims. As the tyres are coming off and I suspect it's been stood quite a while the 155/80R13 Michelins you recommended from Black Circles look a wise investment.

Thanks for the help.

That's a nice car. Good to hear that it's being improved and looked after. I didn't recommend the Michelins from Black Circles just shared a link to give an idea of price and availability.

I had actually already found them on Black Circles but you confirmed the size was correct as 155/80R13. When the car is on way to the bodyshop I'll order them for direct shipment.

Checked our work suppliers, Micheldever, Group Tyres, Merrits, Stapletons and they were all 20% or more higher than Black Circles.
