Hello to the forum. I just recently acquired a little blue beauty :)

If I wanted to do conversion from manual to automatic, what are the gearboxes that would fit on this model? What is the factory default automatic with 1256 engine?

Unusual, most people want to convert the other way! Biggest problem will be finding the parts, theres very few auto's about especially with the OHV engine. Think the standard box was a Borg Warner, carnt remember which model of the top of my head. You will also need different pedal box, prop, not sure if the carb was different as well. Ask Adrian Miller(vivamanviva).

I can source everything else but a working gearbox. I'm just considering what automatics were available from factory to VIVA 1256 at that time.

Carb has automatic choke (automatic cold start device) but otherwise it is the same as manual.

Was it a Borg Warner 35 BG35 as it was used on several makes of cars in that period especially Fords, Rovers, Scimitars, Daimlers, Triumphs.

My understanding is that it is a GM manufactured transmission which was common to all Viva engine sizes. It was also common to many American GM cars. I assume that the actual transmission is quite common but the bell housing, flexplate and torque converter may well be engine specific and difficult to source.

The autobox fitted to FE Victors during the 60's and 70's was a GM unit known as the Strasbourg box, because i believe it was manufactured there. Could the same box have been fitted to Vivas?

I think it is the same box and common to most European GM cars and many American models too. The torque conversion ratio is the major change for different engine sizes.
