Rear trailing arm bushes HC

Postby MAGNUM 2300 » Sun Jul 05, 2009 1:00 pm

Before I start hurting my knuckles and swear....

Have anyone got a good tip about removing the trailing arm bushes thats mounted on the rear axle? Alas upper trailing arms. I hope to manage this with basic tools and not removing the whole axle. The rest of the bushes are no problem as I've removed them with a hydraulic press.

i plan to use a large socket and dirty great big lump hammer , if that fails then i will resort to cutting with a hacksaw through the centre then into the rubber then eventually through the outer casing of the bush - this should relieve the pressure enough for the big hammer method again
a more technical approach would be to make up some kind of puller -either with a large socket or tube and try and pursuade them out this way , but i still like the big hammer method :P

You can use a blow lamp to burn the rubber out then use a hammer and chisel to drive out the steel collar, or you can cut the collar with a hacksaw then drive it out. We use this method on Bedford coach road spring bushes and it works a treat hope this helps Steve

Yep.. Same approaches I thought about. Was afraid hammers and hacksaws had to be used.
I was hoping there could been an easy and nice way to get them out, but regarding they probably been there for 35 years they "might" be stuck...

Guess I'll try to split the collar with an air chisel.

Be carefull look at the arm as the bush comes out better one way than the other because of the way the arm is made, you could spread the link arm eye as they have a seam in them. You can tell by looking at the out side of the arm at the end Steve

Thumbs up for compressed air! The air chisel did the trick. No swearing and no sore knuckles! :D
