Digital speedo into 7 dial dash.

This is an area for discussion about modifications to Vivas.

Yes - anything really as long as its magnetic . I need a plate about 11" in diameter so the cut out teeth protrude over the rear hub - it will be held in place by the road wheel so there should be little chance of it wobbling about and clouting the sensor

Now thats a very tempting proposition! i know the 24v straight 6 jag will go, but the old 5.3 is a heavy ole lump in comparison to the old rover v8 :( very thirsty depending on running system, the 6.0 are only marginally better and the power output isn't good against what it drinks!!

to buy, "cheap as chips" to rebuild or tune £££££ :? ha ha ive owned Jags before! can you tell

whilst a jag v12 sounds absiloutly sublime on song, it still doesn't suit the fren like a v8 does!

I fear you may have planted a seed though

Go on Spence - you know u want to - how about a nice Cologne V6 2.8 with fuel injection , Ive got nothing againts the rover V8 (very good engine) but im sure there are loads of other combinations that warrant some consideration . I suppose the final choice will depend upon availability / cost etc .
If money wasnt an issue - there would be no limit to our choices :D

5 Litre small block Chevy lump fits a treat. As per Chevy Can Ams.
Takes up less room than the 2.3 slanty lump!

Ford? cough cough! arch enemy of Vaux? i can't and i won't  but anything else iam game!

with regards to the dosh, your right, a v10 viper lump could be shoe horned in nearly as easy as the jag...

in a perfect world, i'd be going for a chev LS6 http://www.crateenginedepot.com/LS6-Crate-Engine-17801268-P10C2.aspx hmmm fuel injected v8 porn 8)

Re: Digital speedo into 7 dial dash.

Postby Jon-HPF » Sun May 02, 2010 9:04 pm

Almost a year since i managed to fit a digital speedo unit into the 7 dial dash , i have now managed to rig up the sensor (hopefully correct this time).
I did place the sensor on the n/s rear wheel hub - but under cornering the plate (cog) which was about 11" in diameter and sandwiched between the wheel and hub , was flexing and hitting the sensor (not good for longevity of the poor sensor !

Now made a smaller cog which is sandwiched in place between the prop and pinion shaft - then made a bracket and welded in place on the axle to accept the sensor - this was quite tricky as the distance between sensor and the cog must be no more than 2 mm - although the sensor can be adjusted , i deceded to get it as close as possible with the bracket , then fine adjust the sensor ( has 2 nuts on a thread) . Rather than overtighten and snap the sensor (as i did with the 1st one  ) i used epoxy resin around each end to stop the nuts working loose.

The sensor cog looked a bit exposed to any thing that might be sticking up in the road so i made a guard plate out of 3mm thick stainless steel plate then welded some brackets to the underside of the diff so it could be bolted in position and easily removed if need be.

It looks a bit of an overkill , but i dont want anything fouling that spinning cog and messing up the sensor .

All wired up - tried it out on axle stands - in gears , it works - only problem is when the ignition is swithed on the speedo needle jumps up to 30mph (car not moving) - so had to strip out the dash to get the speedo out and remove the needle - refitted and wound back to zero , problem solved :D
With the dash out , it was a good idea to road test and calibrate the unit - theres a sensitivity adjuster at the back of the unit which is a bugger to get at when all the dash is in place .
A few test runs and constant stopping to adjust it , soon had it almost synchonised with the speed on the satnav .
Best i could get was - Sat nav 28 - unit 30 , sat nav 59 unit 60 sat nav 71 unit 70 , so thats close enough for me :D
