That sounds like what is fitted, so that's probably been used at some stage as a repair. It's not a huge problem, just a case of keeping my eyes open for an original.

I probably have one but you may find one closer. I used my best ones on my car.

There's one on ebay, but looking at how the post-76 one has been installed it seems to be slightly further back in the door card than the original, so getting a new handle itself may not solve the issue. Or is may just be that this one hasn't been fitted correctly.

I need to take the door card off to see what (if anything) is different between the two handles and their respective positions - but I'm working all weekend so that will need to wait.

I finally got round to fitting the Weber carb I bought off Adrian. The original Zenith was running lean no matter what I did to it.

The first issue was when I discovered that the top of the carb is 51mm whereas the Zenith is 58mm, and of course the air filter is 58mm. So I popped into Demon Tweeks in Wrexham and purchased a bit of 51mm silicon tube, cut to size and trimmed a bit it does the job nicely.

Then came the moment of seeing if it did the trick - hurrah - it runs like a dream. Bury the throttle and it just accelerates smoothly without any problem at all. :D


(Just remembered that the guy who had it before me, who sadly passed away, I suspect drove it with the choke out all the time. There was clip on it which prevented it being fully pushed home, and the plugs were very sooty. When I took it apart the inlet gaskets showed signs of sealant so I think someone had tried to fix an air leak in the past thinking that was the cause of the problem.)

Thanks chaps. Another thread on here about brakes reminded me about a comment the MOT tester said during the inspection. Mine has drums all round and no servo, the young lad who is learning the trade looked a bit doubtful about the braking capacity. When it was on the brake testing rig the MOT tester said its braking figures were better than some modern cars he sees. It certainly drives fine on the brakes compared to modern cars.

I have had a few HB's with drums all round. Found them to be perfectly usable in normal day to day driving, only gets interesting when trying to stop quick on a motorway, fade out here we come!!
