My plates were on the inside, one rivet at top centre, one rivet at bottom centre, no other holes, light coloured foam gasket between the plate and body. The metal was thin and rusty so I made new plates and riveted them on from the inside. There's underseal all the way to the hole so the plates were probably always on the inside on my car.

well, finally something worth reporting - yesterday I got the windscreens front and back installed. I had built this up so very much in my mind that it was positively anti climactic to get the thing actually done. Probably no more than 1/2 an hour start to finish - it certainly took longer to chose the glass I was using - very relieved and very happy.
