aren't old cars very trying , hadn't turned engine for over a week , but always had one terminal disconnected, went to try and start the magnum yesterday , a few turns and battery was as flat as a do do , many hours searching for jump lead prices etc and the thing started first time tonight ………….how :?

It's the joy of ownership :)

but seriously it could just be a loose connection . . . Electricity is a lazy thing, if it has to struggle it won't get out of bed for anything.... then sometimes it does...just for the hell of it.
I'd check all connections, undo them all,clean them up and apply a little copper grease and tighten them all up again. Pay particular attention to the engine earth, that bad boy can throw all sorts of things out of whack :)

Correct, just check all connections. If you disconnect your battery for a while remember to tighten the connection and not just push it on. A friend did that for a while and it fried his alternator, it was trying to charge the battery through a high resistance connection over a period of time. The alternator over heated, seized and broke the belt miles from home.
