Demolition Races (MALTA - 19/12/2010)

Postby HC » Fri Dec 24, 2010 12:16 am

Last Sunday (19/12/2010) I went to see the Demolition (Banger) Races and I noted two Vauxhall Viva HC Saloon's.
One was 4 doors, equipped with 1.3L Morris Marina Petrol Engine & the other was an early 2 door model equipped with original 1159cc OHV Engine.
Both owned by the same participating group hence was painted the same colour (orange with a blue stripe in the middle).
Still complete with Front & Rear Bumpers, Grills, Roof side rail nickle strips.

It's a shame to see someone destroys them in that manner

Both after each other.

4 Doors model entering the race circuit.

I actually drove in one of these races once, about 20 years ago at Wimbledon dog track. In a Talbot Horizon, which was catastrophically taken out by a Gold HC Viva... The race was won by a Maxi. Possibly the only motorsport success ever achieved by a Maxi

Akin to grass track racing I used to do back in the 80's around lincolnshire... With one big difference. You could drive the cars afterwards. Not much chance of that here by the looks of it.

Has to be said though, even today there arn't many Viva's being raced in this way. (Thankfully) At least non of the banger boys round here who come in the shop use them. (Despite winding me up by saying they wanna buy mine for the purpose) They prefer something with more grunt. Though on grass track the bigger motors didn't do so well, couldn't keep traction, especially after the track had seen some use. My shared escort Mk1 used to do alright, and that was a gutless 1300. Minis and Aistin 1100's did well too. The Jag and Merc boys just churned dirt haft the time.(All back in the days when you could take an MOT failure, put on a helmet and just race. No cages, meshes and glassless windows... Safety regs stopped all that.)

Just realised how old I sound. :(

Sometimes, I wonder why I bother, and then for one fleeting moment things will go right for a change.
