Cool,

Hey just be aware that the Viva stud pattern is 4 x 101.6mm So while it seems that the golf rims fit well, at 4 x 100mm you'll be pulling the studs inwards under tension, so bending/stressing them at the hub as such. They should be OK but its not ideal really.

Yeah keep the updates coming!

Thank you, we are aware of the Problem.

That's why we are manufacturing 40mm thick adapters with holes for the 4x101,6 stud pattern and stock wheel nuts and 45° rotated the 4x100 pattern with tapped holes for original VW wheel bolts.
There are centering diameters on the backside with 51,1mm for the Viva axles and 57 mm on the frontside for the VW wheels.

Just come across this thread, welcome to the forum, and good luck on the racing. Do you have the number plates for both cars so I can add them to the club register?

Any more progress?

Thank you!

Sorry, no number plates in Austria on unregistered cars.
You only get number plates if the car has valid registration, insurance and you are paying taxes.

There was much progress in the last weeks.

Sadly we didn't get the SL90-engine running, after getting new seals and oil we only got 4 bar at the compression test. I think it would need new piston rings and we ain't got enough time for that.
So we got the low compression engine in, fitted the header of the HC and got it running fairly well. Needs some better ignition timing and carburettor-settings, but that's the plan for the next weekends in addition to the electrics and cosmetics.

We replaced the (in Austria hard to get) Viva Headlights with ones from VW Golf Mk1 and made a custom grille, welded up the roll cage out of 42x2,3mm mild steel, an exhaust with a side pipe and made a console for the old racing seat. Skid plates in the front and back made from 3mm Aluminium.
The fuel tank got derusted and sealed, new fuel lines inside the cabin. The additional spraying unit for the windscreen with 20 liter container got fixed to the roll cage.
The SL90 front axle with disc brakes is working fine, the rear brake calipers were rebuilt and new brake lines all over.
Some additional LED-headlights were installed and the original chrome-bumpers got replaced by stronger steel tubes.
We moved the air filter into the cabin because of the dirt on the track and put a giant pod filter onto :D

So, first of all:
Our Viva has been brave and survived the 24 hour race!

We only hat minor issues with weak engine mounts (welded brackets around them), a broken exhaust at the y-pipe (welded together) and worn brake pads (cutted some replacement parts out of Saab 900 ones and welded the hanger of the original pads onto, perfect fit!). One upper wishbone of the front axle got bent because of the bumpy track, but we got replacement with us and welded on some bracing before fitting it.

It accomplished 924 km (574 mls) in 24 hours and has been a pleasure to drive.
The only bigger issue was the transmission, the shift linkage was somehow broken, we had to hold the 3rd gear in place to avoid jumping out at load changes. But if holding a gear lever for 21 hours is the biggest problem => success!

We are starting preparation for next year this summer, it needs more power. The race was fun and we've been fast at the twisted parts of the track, but at the two straights we got eaten by nearly every other cars (except the 2CV and Fiat 126s).
We got a Bedford CF with 2300ccm Slant-4 with a running engine, but auto transmission. So we are starting to watch out for a manual box and a stronger rear axle!

I did some research on the Bedford CF engine and gearbox.
I found an ad for an 2300 engine including automatic and manual gearbox out of a Bedford CF and will hopefully pick them up on saturday.

The gearbox won't fit in the Viva HB because of the shifter being to far in the front.
Would the 4-speed gearbox from the 1159 Deluxe or SL90 fit on the 2300 slant-4 and handle the torque?

The engine won't get more power than the original 80HP, that's more than enough for the 24hr race.
Rear axle has to be changed, that's for sure.

The 2300 (OHC) gearbox is completely different to the 1256 (OHV) and they are not interchangeable. The OHC automatic and manual gearboxes were fitted to the HB shell so should fit, the hole in the tunnel just needs moved forward. You may have to fit the car shifter rods instead of the van type.
